Why should your hero be honored? My father, who is a member of VFW Post 1003, started the first VFW Post 1003 Honor Guard back in 2001. He served in the Navy in WWII and as a member of the VFW saw a need to have an Honor Guard for those who have served this country with great pride when they passed away. Since its beginning in 2001, they have provided military type honors for deceased veterans and their families. Now 17 members form this group and they represent all branches of the military, and have served in WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf War. All of them are proud to be of service to a veteran's family.
In addition, this group is asked to present the flag folding ceremony, gun salute and taps at various times of the year (Veterans Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July), and for schools and scouting organizations around Central Missouri.
I am extremely proud of my father for seeing the need and encouraging the local VFW to get behind this most worthwhile cause. At the age of 84, he continues to be the coordinator and contact for the VFW when a family requests a military funeral. I truly believe he is proud to be an American and wants to give back to our country and those who have served in the military so proudly.
